Stanford and Cal face off once again for the coveted Golden Shovel at the 37th Annual Real Estate Challenge! This year, the teams will explore a key opportunity within the Fisherman’s Wharf at the SFMTA Kirkland Yard.
Following approval of the Family Zoning Plan, Fisherman's Wharf stands at a pivotal moment in San Francisco’s evolution with several factors converging to position it for reinvention through housing, mixed-use development, and improved transit connectivity.
This spirited competition is a cornerstone event for the Bay Area real estate community—uniting professionals, alumni, and future leaders for an afternoon of networking, inspiration, and friendly rivalry. Enjoy a full lunch while hearing presentations from both teams, followed by the announcement of this year’s winning team, selected by our esteemed panel of judges. No alumni affiliation is necessary to attend and hear presentations that incorporate emerging ideas from the Bay Area’s hallmark universities.
ABOUT THE REAL ESTATE CHALLENGEThe Real Estate Challenge, NAIOP SFBA’s version of the Big Game, is a real estate development competition between legendary rivals Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley (Cal). The unique program is designed to give graduate students hands-on experience in real estate development. Teams are charged with devising and successfully pitching a solution to a complex real-world real estate scenario. Participants embark on an intensive ten-week journey in which they engage with many project sponsor representatives and city officials as well as real estate industry professionals for guidance and mentoring along the way.
